The archipelago is approximately 70 nautical miles north of " La Guaira ", the harbor of Caracas in the Caribbean sea. It has more than 50 islands, 200 sandbanks and different types of coral. In 1972 the 225,153 ha area became a national park to protect the sensitive ecosystem with its rich fish and bird populations. Christopher Columbus, who discovered the group of islands, described them as “the paradise on Earth”.
Out of efforts to conserve Los Roques, flights there are tightly controlled by “INPARQUES”. Because of this it is absolutely necessary to book your flight in advance before arriving in Maiquetia. Without a reservation it is very difficult to find space on any flights.
