Historic Araya is approximately a three-hour drive from Carúpano. The inhospitable peninsula Araya begins at Cariaco, and its formation corresponds roughly to that of a crescent moon.
The only industries on Araya are some freighting and the famous salt flats. One can visit the famous fortress, where the valuable salt was protected from pirate encroachments in former times. The pyramid-like saline mountains are also a beautiful sight.
A trip to the little town of Araya will bring you to a beautiful, white-sanded beach with crystal-clear water that is perfect for sunbathing and windsurfing.
It is an interesting contrast to find such a barren landscape next to tropical rainforest.
