The money we use in Venezuela is the Bolívar. There are two different changing rates: the official one, which is fixed to the American Dollar and is 1920 Bolívares for each $. These rate is controlled by the regime and it does not represent the true worth of the Bolívar. There is another rate, the real one, and this depends on the international stock markets and other items. Anyway, when you come to Venezuela and bring only credit cards, they allways will apply the official rate, and although it's all cheap in Venezuela, you will loose a little money. If you bring cash money, you can change at a better rate , more or less a 3% above the other one, and get more for your money. Travellercheques are working as well, allthough the best is to bring cash.
Travelling and living in Venezuela is rather cheap. To get an idea, here some prices of goods to buy here. Anyway, prices change without logical reasons, so sometimes you pay more for an onion, than a steak. An egg: Bs. 150, Tomatoes a kg: Bs. 1500, 1 l of milk: Bs. 1500, 1 kg of bread: Bs. 3200, 1,5 l mineral water: Bs. 1500, 1 l gas, the most expensive one: Bs. 97 (that's about 3,4 cents), a hammock: Bs. 30000 - 50000, a sack of cement: Bs. 9800, a bustrip (Caracas- Carupano): Bs. 25000, in plane: 170000, a little beer: Bs. 900, a TV set: Bs. 350000. This are some ideas to get an orientation. Don´t hesitate in write us, to ask for more details.
